Three years after Jason Bourne, the Bourne franchise is coming back very soon to USA with a spinoff series called Treadstone.
The show, which is primarily set within the present day, follows a number of sleeper agents after the supposed shuttering of Treadstone years prior.
Treadstone will expand the lore of the franchise and fill in the blanks fans of the films have been searching for, and according to executive producer Ben Smith, it will also play into a new Bourne film, which is in the works.
Ben Smith, who is a producer of the films and Treadstone, confirmed the news while speaking to CinemaBlend about the upcoming spy and sleeper agent series. Smith couldn’t provide explicit details, but did confirm there will be connections between the next movie and the new series. He said:
“While there are no explicit details on the next Bourne film and what it may entail, the fact that one is even in the works is news enough. It has been three years since the release of Jason Bourne, and there was some doubt on whether or not the franchise would get another film after that.
Now those hopes are alive yet again, and it seems as though Treadstone may lay the groundwork or provide some clues for whatever this next film has planned.
Ben Smith did say that the events and stories that are explored within Treadstone would be “concurrent” to this next movie, so the events of said film could presumably affect Treadstone in the future.
It sounds like the franchise is working to really expand its universe with these two projects, and in a world where shared universes are all the rage, we’re here for it. Will this all eventually lead to some massive “Bourne-vengers” event? Hopefully Moby will do the score if so!
As previously mentioned, Treadstone follows the lives of various sleeper agents as they’re re-activated around the world under mysterious circumstances to carry out deadly missions. The series explores the origins of Operation Treadstone, and is set primarily in the present day a few years removed from the events of Jason Bourne. The series was created by Tim Kring, and stars Jeremy Irvine, Brian J. Smith, Omar Metwally, Han Hyo-joo and Tracy Ifeachor.
